How to Remotely Attend a Cray XD1 Elective Course

Cray now offers several 2-hour Cray XD1 elective courses. The classes usually occur the day after the XD1S and XD1T classes. Students who attend the XD1S or XD1T class can also attend any of the 2-hour elective classes while they are in Chippewa Falls. Students who have already completed the XD1S or XD1T class can attend the elective classes remotely via an online conferencing tool (instead of returning to Chippewa Falls). Please use the comments section of the registration form to indicate that you plan to attend an elective class remotely. Refer to the TTD training schedule for the dates of upcoming XD1 elective classes.

Remote training equipment requirements

  • A telephone
  • A workstation with one of the following operating system: Windows 98SE, ME, NT, 2000, 2003, or XP, Linux, MAC OS X
  • A Java enabled browser: IE 5.5 or higher, Safari 1.2, Netscape 4.7 or higher, Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or higher, AOL 7.0 or higher
  • A 56kbps or faster internet connection (broadband is recommended)
Note that Linux users may need to install Java software and manually link the software to their Internet browser. Go to URL http://java.com to ensure that you have the latest version of Java and to download updates if necessary. Contact the registrar prior to the training session if you need help setting up the Java software on a Linux platform.

Joining an online session

When you register to remotely attend an XD1 elective training session, the registrar sends you a confirmation email that contains the date and time of the session, the session ID number, and a conference call number. Please initiate the online session and dial into the conference call at least 10 minutes prior to the start of the training session. If you use a dial-up connection, please initiate the online session at least 20 minutes prior to the start of the class to provide time for the viewer applet to load.
  1. Enter the session ID and your name below and click the Join button.
  2. The system initiates a Java applet that spawns the GatherPlace presentation viewer. If you need additional plug-ins, the system prompts you to download these applications. Your viewer may be blank or display a system message until the leader shares the presentation materials.
  3. During the presentation the GatherPlace viewer displays an image of the presenter's screen that includes all applications that the presenter shares. If a portion of the screen contains a blue square or a crosshatched square, that portion of the screen is covered by an application that the presenter is not sharing.
